A Guide to Parent Rights in Special Education
Federal & State Guidelines
Princeton’s Special Education program is dedicated to providing additional services, support, programs, specialized placements, or environments to ensure that all students' educational needs are met.
The Individuals with Disabilities Education Improvement Act of 2004, the federal law commonly referred to as “IDEA”, has established a process for determining student educational needs and getting special education services if a child’s disability requires them. “Whose IDEA Is This? A Parent's Guide to the Individuals with Disabilities Education Improvement Act of 2004 (IDEA)” boils down the language of the Act to main points that will help parents be an effective partner in their child’s education.

For preschoolers and school-age children, a disability means having one or more conditions defined by federal regulations and state standards. These disabilities include autism, intellectual disability, specific learning disability, deaf-blindness, deafness, emotional disturbance, hearing impairment, multiple disabilities, orthopedic impairment, other health impairment, speech or language impairment, traumatic brain injury, visual impairment (including blindness), and developmental delay (preschoolers only).
