Princeton Athletics Department named Chris Cunningham as the next Assistant Athletic Director, effective June 1, 2023. He succeeds Matthew Weber, who accepted the Wyoming Athletic Director position earlier this year.
Cunningham comes to Princeton from Murray State University, where he served as the Special Teams Coordinator and Outside Linebacker Coach for the football team since 2020. In his role at Murray State University, he developed student-athletes academically, athletically, and socially. From an athletic standpoint, he produced an All-Conference recipient every year he coached since his career began in 2011.
At Murray State, Cunningham served as the On-Campus Housing Liaison and Fraternity Liaison and was a member of the Diversity & Inclusion Committee for the Athletic Department. He also was the campus advisor for Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc., and helped train young men for leadership.
Prior to Murray State University, he spent time at the University of Virginia as the Defensive Coordinator and Linebackers Coach and Community Service Coordinator. Cunningham was also selected to the NFL/NCAA Coaches Academy of 2019. He had previous coaching stints at Lawrence University from 2015-2018, University of Pikeville from 2014-2015, and Eastern Kentucky University from 2011-2014. His other duties have included academic coordinator and a member of the Title IX committee.
In Cunningham’s new role as Assistant Athletic Director, he brings a tremendous work ethic and knowledge of key areas in athletics to Princeton, especially personnel development and supervision. “My wife, Nicole, and I are incredibly humbled and blessed to accept this opportunity to represent the Princeton community. I look forward to building on the tradition of excellence that Princeton has garnered in the state of Ohio and nationally.”
Cunningham received his master’s degree from Eastern Kentucky University in Sports Administration and bachelor’s degree in Sports Management with a minor in Business.
Chris and his wife Nicole - who is a 2010 Princeton graduate - have three children: Larkyn, Kendall, and Camden.
