Princeton City School District Celebrates Hispanic Heritage Month with a Festival
Hispanic Heritage Month is celebrated annually from September 15 through October 15. This year, Princeton City Schools is adding a new districtwide event, The Hispanic Heritage Festival, to celebrate the unique diversity and contributions of Hispanic and Latino culture. Additionally, a proclamation for Hispanic Heritage Month will be on the agenda at the September 12 School Board meeting.
The Hispanic Heritage Festival will be held at Viking Village at the Amphitheater Murals on the corner of Chester and Lippelman Roads, on the Princeton High School campus. The free event from 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. on October 1, 2022, will include live music, dance performances, Zumba and Salsa lessons, and mariachi.
Representatives from the school and community organizations will be sharing information about the services they provide.
Food trucks will be available for food and non-alcoholic beverage purchases. Venue t-shirts will be on sale for $20 to help offset the cost of the family-friendly event.
All are welcome to attend.
“Our schools acknowledge the culture and traditions of students, teachers, staff, and community members year long,” explains Tom Burton, superintendent. “It is through awareness, connection, and inclusivity that we enrich the educational experience for each of our students.”
“This Hispanic Heritage Month, honoring and celebrating the contributions of our community is more important than ever,” said Ana Martinez, bilingual parent liaison for the district. “Hispanic/Latino Americans have made impactful contributions to our community. Whether you’re from the Caribbean, Central America, South America, or Spain, let us celebrate and rejoice in our shared culture, customs, traditions, language, diversity, and our impressive collective impact. ¡Feliz mes de la herencia hispana!”
Burton added, “The district theme at Princeton for the past year has been ‘Our Community is Our Campus,’ and starting this tradition, along with many other activities that happen in classrooms, is another way that we focus on the strengths of our community. The festival is about bringing our community together to build connections and relationships.”
In 1988, Hispanic Heritage Month was signed into law by President Ronald Reagan. September 15 was chosen as the starting point because it is the anniversary of the independence of five Latin American countries (Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, and Nicaragua) that all declared independence in 1821.

El distrito escolar de Princeton celebra el mes de la Herencia Hispana con un festival
El mes de la herencia hispana es celebrado anualmente desde Septiembre 15 hasta Octubre 15. Este año, El distrito escolar de Princeton está añadiendo un evento para todo el distrito, El Festival de la Herencia Hispana, para celebrar la diversidad única y la contribución de la cultura Hispana y Latina. Adicionalmente una proclamación por el mes de la Herencia Hispana estará en la agenda de Septiembre 12 en la reunión de la junta directiva de la escuela.
El Festival de la Herencia Hispana tomará lugar en el Viking Village, en el mural del Amphitheater, en la esquina de las calles Chester y Lippelman, En el Campo de la escuela secundaria de Princeton (PHS). El evento es gratis y es de 11:00 a.m. a 3:00 p.m. el 1 de Octubre del año 2022, incluirá música en vivo, bailes, clases de salsa y zumba y mariachi. Representantes de la escuela y organizaciones estarán compartiendo información acerca de los servicios que proveen. Camiones de comida estarán disponibles para la compra de comidas y bebidas no alcohólicas. También tendremos a la venta t-shirts para ayudar con el costo del evento familiar. Todos son bienvenidos.
“Nuestra escuela reconoce la cultura y tradiciones de los estudiantes, maestros, personal y miembros de la comunidad todo el año”, explica el superintendente, Tom Burton. “Es por la concientización, conexión e inclusividad que enriquecemos la experiencia educativa para cada uno de nuestros estudiantes”.
“El mes de la Herencia Hispana, honrando y celebrando la contribución de nuestra comunidad es más importante que nunca” dice Ana Martinez, la trabajadora de enlace de los padres bilingüe del distrito. “Los Hispans/Latinos Americanos han impactado nuestra comunidad con sus contribuciones. Ya sea que seas de el Caribe, América Central, América del Sur o España, déjenos celebrarlo, alegrarnos en nuestra cultura compartida, folklore, tradiciones, lenguaje, diversidad, y nuestro impresionante impacto colectivo. ¡Feliz mes de la herencia hispana!”
Añadió el señor Burton, “El tema del distrito el año pasado ha sido “Nuestra Comunidad es Nuestro Campo”, y empezando con esta tradición, junto a muchas otras actividades que suceden en los salones, es otra forma que nosotros nos enfocarnos en la fortaleza de nuestra comunidad. El festival es acerca de juntar a la comunidad y desarrollar conexiones y relaciones”.
En 1988, el Mes de la Herencia Hispana fue asignado en ley por el Presidente Ronald Reagan. Septiembre 15 fue escogido como el punto de inicio debido al aniversario de independencia de cinco países Latino Americano (Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras y Nicaragua) todos declararon su independencia en 1821.
