Nationwide Emergency Alert - October 4, 2023

Please be advised that the federal government will conduct a nationwide test of the Emergency Alert System (EAS) and Wireless Emergency Alerts (WEA) on Wednesday, October 4, at 2:20 PM Eastern Standard Time. 

What to Expect 

All cell phones will receive a text message accompanied by a unique tone and vibration. Radios and televisions will also broadcast a test emergency alert.

What is the Purpose?

The purpose of the October 4th  test is to ensure that the systems continue to be effective means of warning the public about emergencies, particularly those on the national level. In the case of widespread severe weather or other significant events, the test may be postponed. The backup testing date is October 11, 2023.

Potential Classroom Disruption We understand that the timing of this test coincides with school hours. Please be prepared for a momentary interruption during class or activities. Teachers and staff are informed and will handle the situation to minimize disruption while ensuring students understand that it is only a test. We also ask parents to share this info with their children so they know the alert is only a test. 

Message Content

Cell Phone: "THIS IS A TEST of the National Wireless Emergency Alert System. No action is needed."

Radio/TV:  "This is a nationwide test of the Emergency Alert System, issued by the Federal Emergency Management Agency. This is only a test. No action is required by the public." 

This test is part of the federal government's ongoing efforts to ensure the effectiveness of emergency alert systems. No action is needed on your part when you receive this alert.
