Candy Fractions

The fifth grade students completed activities with an actual candy bar (a regular size Hershey® bar, divided into 12 sections). Students  used their bar to determine how to write fractions as part of the whole. They explored improper fractions and mixed numbers. The goal is for students to see how different fractions are equivalent and relate to the 12 sections. Students also used their candy bar pieces to solve addition and subtraction problems. These are written so that they work out nicely using the candy bar pieces. After modeling with their candy, students sketched the problem on their paper and then at the end they were allowed to eat their manipulatives!
