2nd Grade Scientists Second graders in science class have been learning about how to be a good scientist. The students conducted experiments on how to lift ice with a string. Then we moved to a unit on Force and Motion. During this unit, we were conducting experiments on our playground equipment, figuring out if we use a push or a pull to make the equipment work.

Creepy Carrots Challenge! In the library, the students heard the book Creepy Carrots by Aaron Reynolds! They were tasked to build their own fence to keep the carrots in. They could only use sticks, tape and yarn. They had to brainstorm and cooperate with their team to see which one could build the strongest fence. The students really enjoyed this literature extension. Thanks, Mrs. Anguiano!

Field Trip to Gorman Farm Grade four has had fun getting to visit Gorman Heritage Farm this month! We learned what some toys were like for 10-year- olds, how a farm was run during the 1800's and did some chores expected of kids before the farm had running water. They ground the chicken feed and fed chickens too! Each class had great weather. We enjoyed our picnic lunch and meeting new friends from Woodlawn.

Multiplication Mania Fourth grade is currently focusing on multiplication. We began building arrays, learned several strategies to do single-digit times two, three, and four digit numbers. Now, we are moving onto a two-digit times a two-digit number. Please continue to help your student by practicing their multiplication facts. Remember, there is extra help on their Google Classroom. Thank you for your support.

5th Grade iReady Rockstars We’d like to give a big shout-out to our students who have been working hard to pass iReady reading and math lessons during the month of October. It’s important that students work on their paths and focus on passing lessons, and not just completing minutes. We are currently working towards a schoolwide iReady challenge to see which homeroom can pass the most lessons. These are our homeroom leaders for the first three weeks of October: Jaylin B. (21), Camarelle J. (20), A’Mya F. (22), Zander R. (23), Allison J, and Alexia G. (18). Nice work and keep passing those lessons!!

Team Building in Reading! A new quarter means new teams in SFA Reading classes. Students work cooperatively on reading tasks throughout the year. In order to introduce them to their new team, students in Mrs. McCrory’s reading class completed a team building activity. The teams were challenged to build the tallest free-standing tower using only toothpicks, marshmallows, and pretzel sticks. They also had to budget “money” to buy new supplies. They worked great with their new teams and created some interesting structures!

Living Lockers All intermediate grade students are creating “Living Lockers” this year. This is a great way to showcase the habits they are learning in Leader in Me. The lockers are being used to showcase their accomplishments, activities, and positive happenings throughout the year. The students started by selecting a word that described them as an individual. They decorated the word and now it is displayed on their lockers. They earn “badges” throughout the year for their activities and accomplishments. These badges will be placed on their lockers. Next time you're upstairs, be sure to check out our Living Lockers!
