Princeton High School's Jazz Ensemble made a stunning impression, delivering a performance that preceded an electrifying show by the Cincinnati Contemporary Jazz Orchestra (CCJO) at The Redmoor on the evening of Wednesday, February 5, 2025.
The Redmoor Live Music Center, located in Mt. Lookout, provided an iconic backdrop for the evening's special concert highlighting the music of the legendary band Chicago, with Walfredo Reyes Jr. – Chicago's third-ever drummer – joining CCJO. The performance reimagined classic hits like "Saturday in the Park" and "25 or 6 to 4" with a fresh, innovative approach. Reyes dazzled the audience with his talents, adding a Latin influence to the Chicago hits.
Before the main event, the Princeton Jazz Ensemble set the stage with what venue staff called an outstanding opening performance. Band director Todd Leonhardt led his student ensemble in a concert that captivated a sold-out crowd, with 95% of attendees being outside the school's immediate community.
"Our students absolutely 'rocked' the crowd with a high-energy, superior performance that was recognized as being way beyond their years," Leonhardt said. Throughout the evening, the students showcased both musical talents and remarkable professionalism.
Proud Princeton parent Tom Benjamin added, “What a night it was! They crushed three popular tunes from Earth, Wind & Fire, and the Doobie Brothers in front of a packed house of jazz enthusiasts.”
The CCJO staff praised the band's performance, with Leonhardt reporting numerous compliments from both audience members and musicians. The evening culminated in what the director described as a "thrill of a lifetime" for the students, creating memories that will last well beyond this single performance.
The performance may not have been possible without the support of the Princeton Music Boosters, who covered the cost of a bus to take the students and instruments to the venue because field trips were eliminated after the failed levy in November.
The successful concert highlights the strength of Princeton City School District’s music program and the exceptional talent of its young musicians.
